Bath Trade Unions Council: 21 January 2021 (online)

Present Sisters Phillips (Unite, Treasurer), Kasprowski (Unite), Brothers Carley
(UCU, Secretary), Bampfylde (Unite), Chapple (Somerset TUC).

Apologies Brother Lewis (RMT)

May Day event

It was agreed that in the light of possible continuing restrictions during the current pandemic, we should consider an online event to mark May Day. Brother Chapple reported that an event held in Wells had worked very well and noted that holding an event online would make it easier to have a large SATUC presence. Secretary to contact other Trades Councils to coordinate dates. Secretary to contact SWTUC to inquire about how they have run similar events. Agreed that an event should run from 1800 on 1 May.

University of Bath Court

Proposed changes to representation on the University of Bath Court (part of its governance structure) were discussed. It was agreed that, in light of increased representation for staff and recognized unions at the university, the trades council would not raise objections to the removal of its seat on the Court.

History

Brother Chapple informed us that he is writing an account of Somerset support for miners during the Miners’ Strike and would welcome the opportunity to interview anyone with memories of the time and to look at memorabilia and other material.

Meeting closed With an attack on the Secretary’s facial hair.
